The kettlebell earns its place on ballistic movements. The offset handle puts the weight’s centre of mass away from your grip, which is what makes a swing feel different from holding a dumbbell and moving it in the same arc.

For pressing and rowing, a dumbbell does the same job. Buy a kettlebell for the swings.

The swing is a hinge, not a squat

The most common error, and it turns a hip exercise into a poor front raise.

The bell travels because your hips snap forward, not because your arms lift it. Your knees bend a little; your hips travel back a lot. If you are squatting the bell up and down, learn the pattern with a Romanian deadlift first — same hinge, slower, easier to feel.

Why EMOM

Every minute on the minute gives you a fixed work-to-rest structure that scales itself. Finish your fifteen swings in twenty seconds and you get forty seconds rest; as fatigue accumulates the set takes longer and the rest shrinks.

That self-regulating property is what makes it a good conditioning format rather than just a way to count.

Common questions

What weight kettlebell should I start with?

16 kg for most men and 8 to 12 kg for most women, for swings. Presses and single-arm work usually need something lighter than your swing weight. One well-chosen bell covers a lot before you need a second.

Are kettlebell swings good for you?

They train explosive hip extension and posterior chain endurance in a way few other movements do, and they load the hinge pattern without heavy spinal compression. They also punish poor technique, so learn the hinge with a Romanian deadlift first.

Is a kettlebell better than a dumbbell?

For ballistic work — swings, cleans, snatches — yes, because the offset handle and displaced centre of mass change the movement. For pressing and rowing, a dumbbell is equivalent or better. Own a kettlebell for what it does uniquely, not as a dumbbell replacement.
