How to do the leg press

  1. 01Sit with your back and hips flat against the pad — no gap in the lower back.
  2. 02Place your feet shoulder-width on the platform, roughly mid-height.
  3. 03Release the safeties and lower the platform under control until your knees reach about 90 degrees or a little past.
  4. 04Stop the moment your pelvis starts to lift off the pad. That point is your depth.
  5. 05Press back up through mid-foot, stopping just short of locking the knees.

Coaching cues

  • Lower back glued to the pad — that is the depth gauge.
  • Push through the whole foot, not the toes.
  • Never lock out hard at the top.

FaultLocking the knees at the top

FixSnapping into full extension under a heavy stack is the one genuinely risky thing on this machine. Stop a few degrees short and keep tension.

FixHold the handles. Pushing on your knees both cheats the rep and puts your hands somewhere they cannot escape from.

FaultFeet too low on the platform

FixIt forces the heels up and loads the knees. Mid-platform or slightly high is the safer default.

The leg press is the most forgiving way to load your quadriceps heavily, and the machine where the two genuine risks are both easy to avoid.

The lower back decides your depth

There is no universally correct depth. There is the point where your pelvis begins to tuck under and your lower back lifts away from the pad.

Past that, you are loading a flexed lumbar spine with the entire stack pushing into it. This is the mechanism behind almost every serious leg press injury, and it happens most often when someone chases a deeper range because it looks better.

Keep your hips flat. Stop when they want to move. If that gives you a shorter range than the person before you, that is a fact about hip proportions, not a deficiency.

Do not lock out

The second risk, and it takes a second to avoid.

Snapping the knees into full extension under a heavy stack loads the joint at end range with the muscles momentarily disengaged. Stop a few degrees short, keep the quads under tension, and the problem disappears entirely.

Where it fits

The leg press removes balance, coordination and spinal loading from the equation. That is a limitation and a feature.

The limitation is that those demands were training something. The feature is that without them, you can push much closer to genuine muscular failure safely — which makes it excellent for accumulating quad volume, and a good option for anyone whose lower back is the thing that limits their squatting.

Use it alongside a squat pattern rather than instead of one.

Common questions

What muscles does the leg press work?

Primarily the quadriceps, with the glutes and hamstrings contributing more as depth increases. Foot placement shifts the emphasis somewhat — higher on the platform recruits more glute and hamstring, lower favours the quads — but the machine is a quad exercise at any setting.

How deep should you go on the leg press?

Until your knees reach about 90 degrees or slightly past, and no further than the point where your pelvis starts lifting off the pad. That pelvic tuck rounds your lower back under load, which is the mechanism behind most leg press injuries.

Is the leg press better than squats?

Different, not better. It removes the balance and spinal loading demands, which makes it easier to push close to failure safely and a good option for higher volume or for people whose back limits squatting. It also trains less of the body, because that stability demand was doing something.

Why should you not lock your knees on the leg press?

Because a heavy stack snapping into full extension puts a large force through a joint at end range with no muscular tension protecting it. Stopping a few degrees short keeps the quads loaded and the joint protected.

Does foot placement change which muscles work?

Modestly. Higher on the platform increases hip flexion and brings in more glute and hamstring; lower increases knee travel and emphasises the quads; wider brings in the adductors. None of these turns it into a different exercise.
